How It Works
Laser Hair Removal is the new high tech, modern method of permanently removing unwanted hair on areas such as the face, upper lip, neck, chest, breasts, underarms, back, abdomen, bikini line and legs. Laser hair removal works by using a specialized laser to heat up the hair follicles enough to destroy them, while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
We have a multiple laser technologies on hand. This allows us to perform laser hair removal on your specific hair color and skin type. Because lasers can only destroy hair follicles while they are in the growth phase, a series of hair removal treatments over a few months are normally required to achieve the desired results. Call us for a free consultation and we will assess your individual case, formulating a laser hair removal treatment plan that is best for you.
Laser Hair Removal is effective on all skin types, including dark skinned people of all ethnic origins. Side effects are very rare, and if your skin type is susceptible to sensitivity or irritation we will provide you with after care instructions to minimize any discomfort. Most patients can go right back to work after laser hair removal with no after effects, even after treating large areas.
With laser hair removal, the energy of the laser light is used to specifically hinder hair growth. In this respect the laser penetrates the upper layers of skin and transfers its energy to the hair--the energy is absorbed by the pigment melanin in the hair. The absorbed light energy is converted into heat and emitted. The entire follicle area is damaged by the heat, with necrosis of the hair follicle taking place at a temperature of around 60°C. The cooling in the laser system prevents the epidermis suffering coincident heat damage. After the treatment there may be some slight reddening of the skin, but this disappears of its own accord after a short period.
For the optimum and sustained removal of hair with the aid of a laser a number of individual treatments are generally necessary (as a rule 6 – 10 treatments). In addition to the factors mentioned above (skin and hair colour, hair thickness and depth), there is a further reason for the necessity for more than one treatment: Hairs constantly undergo various growth cycles. Only hairs in the growth phase may be removed on a sustained basis with the aid of lasers.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do hair removal treatments feel like?
The laser handpiece cools and soothes as it glides along your skin. When the pulse of light is delivered, some patients experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. No local anesthesia or pain medication is typically required; however some patients may prefer to use a topical anesthetic when sensitive areas are treated.
How many treatments will I need?
Most areas require 6-10 treatments. However, the number of treatments required for optimal long-term benefits depends on multiple factors – hair thickness, the area treated and your hair’s growth cycle. Interestingly, not all hairs are actively growing at the same time and actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting. Treatments work by disabling the hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the hair follicles in a given area.
What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following your treatment, the area may appear a bit red and swollen. Three to seven days after treatment you may experience what seems to be regrowth of hair. Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not regrowing. Between treatments you should not wax or pluck your hair, but it is permissible to shave.
What are the possible side effects?
Although patients experience few side effects, the most commonly noticed are slight reddening and local swelling of the skin, similar to a sunburn. These effects typically last for several hours or less. In rare instances, blistering may occur. Consult with your medical professional for complete information on the benefits and risks of treatment.
How does laser hair removal compare with electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a tedious, invasive, and painful process that involves inserting a needle into each individual hair follicle and delivering an electrical charge to them one at a time. Electrolysis often requires years of treatments at regular intervals. By delivering light energy to hundreds of hair follicles at a time, the laser treatment effectively treats an area in just seconds that would take over an hour with electrolysis.
